About Norfolk
Pulling up to Bishy Barney Bee in Thetford Forest, though, all that melted away. Tucked right in the heart of Breckland District, this little gem is surrounded by nothing but whispering pines and the odd cheeky squirrel eyeing your nuts (the edible kind, obviously). It’s one of those Scandi-style lodges – timber-clad, low-slung, with a veranda that screams “sit here with a GandT and pretend you’re on telly.” We arrived mid-afternoon, the sun filtering through the trees like it was auditioning for a Laura Ashley advert. The boys were out of the car before I’d even parked, whooping as they dashed about the decking, pretending to be forest explorers. “Dad, is this our castle?” the youngest yelled. I laughed – more like our chaotic kingdom, but who was I complaining? First impressions? Bloody brilliant. Stepping inside felt like a warm hug from a mate’s mum. Compact but clever – open-plan living with a squishy sofa facing a wood-burner (unlit, but we’d sort that later), a kitchenette kitted out with all the essentials, and two snug bedrooms at the back. The beds were proper comfy, with those fluffy duvets that make you want to dive straight in. No posh fripperies, just honest lodge life: a telly for rainy days, board games stacked in a cupboard (hello, Monopoly marathons), and French doors opening onto that veranda with views of the forest proper. We could hear birdsong and the rustle of leaves – pure Norfolk magic, none of that seaside tat from further afield. We unpacked in a whirlwind of socks flying everywhere and the lads claiming bunk beds that weren’t even bunks. Minor chaos ensued when the youngest tipped his juice on the rug, but hey, that’s the joy of it – no pristine hotel lobby to tut at us. Instead, we cracked open a pack of Jaffa Cakes, brewed a proper cuppa, and flopped on the sofa. The light streaming in was golden, turning the whole place into a haven. I nipped out for a quick mooch around the site – it’s part of a cluster of lodges, all spaced out for privacy, with paths snaking off into Thetford Forest Park. Within five minutes’ wander, you’re knee-deep in trails perfect for little legs, spotting deer if you’re lucky. As the sun dipped, we fired up the portable BBQ on the veranda – sausages sizzling, buns toasting, the works. The boys chased each other round the lodge, faces smeared with ketchup, while the wife and I clinked bottles and watched the shadows lengthen. Sat there, pint in hand, I had one of those quiet moments – you know, the gentle nudge from life? Here we were, miles from Wi-Fi woes and work emails, just us lot in our woodland bubble. Work’s been mad lately, me chasing deadlines like a headless chicken, but this? This was the reset button. Simple pleasures – a cracking sunset, belly laughs, and the promise of forest rambles tomorrow. Bishy Barney Bee nailed it on arrival: unpretentious, utterly relaxing, and just chaotic enough to feel like home. Can’t wait to wake up to birdsong and do it all again. |
