About Norfolk
I finally made it to Beachcomber in Holme-next-the-Sea after a bit of a faff on the drive from King's Lynn. I'd set off full of beans, playlist blasting some indie tunes, only for the sat-nav to chuck a wobbly just past Hunstanton – it insisted on routing me down a tiny lane that turned out to be more pothole than road. My little hatchback bounced like a kangaroo on steroids, and I ended up with a muddy wheel arch and a bruised ego. Laughable really, but it set the tone for a proper Norfolk adventure: unpredictable, but all the better for it.

Pulling up to Beachcomber around teatime on that first Friday, I was gobsmacked. This cosy beachfront cottage sits right on the edge of Holme Dunes, with the North Sea lapping just a stone's throw away. The wooden exterior, weathered by countless gales, screamed "proper seaside hideaway," and as I unlocked the door, the salty tang hit me like an old mate's hug. Inside, it was all low beams, squishy sofas, and a kitchen that begged for bacon sarnies. First impressions? Bliss. I dumped my bags, cracked open a tinnie, and stepped out to the patio for that golden hour glow over the beach. The dunes stretched out like nature's rumpled duvet, and I could already picture miles of walks ahead.

Saturday dawned with promise – clear skies, a gentle breeze off the sea. I laced up my boots and headed straight for the Norfolk Coast Path, which hugs the shoreline from Beachcomber like it was made for lazy explorers like me. First stop: a brisk two-mile yomp to Gore Point, where the beach meets those iconic pinewoods. The sand was firm underfoot, perfect for striding out, and I spotted a few seals bobbing about, probably eyeing me up for chips. Halfway there, I detoured into Holme Dunes National Nature Reserve – proper walkers' paradise, with boardwalks snaking through marram grass and bird hides for a cheeky sit-down. I felt like a kid again, wind tousling my hair, snapping pics of oystercatchers darting along the tideline. Lunch was a pork pie from my rucksack, scoffed on a driftwood log, with the waves crashing like applause.

But oh, British weather – you cheeky devil. By early afternoon, the sky turned from blue to battleship grey faster than you can say "gale force eight." What was meant to be a gentle stroll back morphed into a full-on hike against the wind, rain spitting sideways like it had a personal grudge. I hunkered down, hood up, laughing at myself as sand blasted my legs. Plans for a sunset amble to Thornham? Scrubbed. Instead, I dashed back to Beachcomber, dripping like a drowned rat, and lit the wood burner. Cuppa in hand, I watched the storm rage from the window – horizontal rain lashing the panes, waves rearing up like grumpy hippos. It was humbling, really. Made me reflect on how I barrel through life chasing perfect days, when it's the messy ones that stick. Norfolk doesn't do Instagram filters; it gives you the raw deal, and I loved it.

Sunday's forecast was no better – lashing rain from dawn – so I adapted like a true Brit. Layered up in waterproofs, I tackled a shorter loop along the beach towards the lifeboat station, just a mile out. The sea was wild, foam flying, and the dunes offered shelter in patches. Puddles turned paths into obstacle courses; I slipped once, landing on my arse with a splodge, which had me in stitches. No epic treks today, but those moody hikes felt alive, electric. Back at the cottage by noon, I peeled off soggy socks, brewed tea number four, and pondered from the warmth: sometimes the weather writes the best stories. Beachcomber wasn't just a base; it was my cosy bunker amid the chaos, amplifying every gust and glimpse of sun.

Those first impressions? They'll linger. Norfolk's coast, with its fickle skies and endless paths from the doorstep, turned a simple three-day jaunt into something soul-stirring. If you're after walks that whip you into shape – weather be damned – this is your spot. I left windswept, wiser, and already plotting a return.
