About Norfolk
I finally made it to Burnham Market after what felt like the world's most unnecessary detour—spilling half a thermos of builder's tea all over the passenger seat of my battered Fiesta about ten miles out from King's Lynn. Picture this: I'm humming along the A149, windows down, Norfolk's big skies stretching out like a proper postcard, when I grab for a sip and—splash!—a tidal wave of lukewarm Tetley soaks my road atlas and turns the seat into a soggy swamp. "Brilliant," I mutter, pulling over near a field of bemused sheep, dabbing futilely with a service station napkin. Classic me, turning a straightforward drive into a farce before I've even checked in. But hey, it was only a minor catastrophe, and by the time I trundled into Burnham Market's high street, I was already chuckling about it.

Burnham Market itself is one of those quintessentially Norfolk gems—a posh village green ringed by honey-stoned cottages, independent shops, and the Hoste Arms pub looking like it's been there since the Ark. It's the sort of place where locals nod hello and everything feels effortlessly chic without trying too hard. I parked up outside the 2 Bed Lodge, my home for the next three days, heart racing a bit from the tea debacle and the promise of proper downtime. The lodge is tucked just off the main drag, a cosy wooden haven that screams "get away from it all" while being slap bang in the village action. As I fumbled with the key safe (post-tea hands still a tad sticky), the door swung open to reveal this absolute beaut: low-beamed ceilings, a wood-burning stove begging for a match, and that fresh linen scent wafting from the super-king bed upstairs.

First impressions? Blown away. The open-plan living space is compact but clever—plenty of room for two, with a squishy corner sofa facing French doors that open straight onto a private decked garden. I dumped my bags and immediately brewed a fresh cuppa in the galley kitchen, peering out at the birds flitting about. It's got that lodge vibe: rustic yet comfy, with underfloor heating (a godsend in Norfolk's unpredictable weather) and all the mod cons like a smart telly and Nespresso machine. I plonked down with my mug, feet up, and thought, "This is it—this is the holiday reset button I've been craving."

Wandering out for a nose around, the village wrapped its arms around me like an old mate. Just a stone's throw away, I grabbed a pasty from the Burnham Bakery—flaky, steaming, stuffed with proper local beef—and scoffed it on a bench by the green, watching wellies-clad dog walkers and 4x4s cruise past. Popped into Jolada for a mooch; their candles and quirky homewares had me eyeing up a Norfolk terrier mug as a souvenir. The sun was dipping low, casting that golden light over the thatched roofs, and I felt a proper pang of self-reflection: life's too short for soggy atlases and work stress. Here, in this unpretentious lodge, everything slowed right down. I even forgave the tea spill—it was the perfect icebreaker to a stay that's already magic.

Back at the lodge that evening, I lit the stove (logs provided, cheers!), cracked open a bottle of Norfolk cider, and sprawled on the deck with the sunset. The garden's enclosed and private, alive with butterflies and the hum of bees—pure bliss. No grand plans needed; just this spot, this vibe. First day's chaos melted into the best kind of first impressions: welcoming, whimsical, and utterly Norfolk. Can't wait to wake up to it all over again tomorrow.
