About Norfolk
First impressions? Blimey, what a belter. It’s one of those proper hidden gems – a cosy one-bed timber lodge plonked right by a lazy stretch of the Old Bedford River, with nothing but fenland birdsong and the occasional whirr of a wind pump for company. I parked up, hauled my rucksack inside, and proper exhaled. The place is compact but cracking: open-plan living with a squishy sofa facing a wood-burner (unlit, but screaming potential), a dinky kitchenette stocked with tea bags and a cheeky bottle of local ale left by the hosts, and a bedroom upstairs that’s all snug duvet and skylight views of the clouds scudding by. Outside, a private deck overlooks the water, complete with a couple of Adirondack chairs begging for a sit-down. No posh spa or infinity pool here – just pure, unfiltered Norfolk peace. I cracked open that ale, feet up, and thought, “This is it. Three days of faffing about in paradise.” But the real magic kicked in when I decided to get properly lost. No maps, no plans – just wandering off down the lanes on foot, letting the flatlands lead me astray. First accidental find: a wee nature reserve I stumbled on not five minutes from the lodge, down a unmarked path by the Middle Level Main Drain. It’s one of those off-the-beaten-track spots where the reeds tower over you, bitterns boom in the distance, and you might spot an otter if you’re dead quiet (I wasn’t, but a kingfisher flashed by like a turquoise bullet). Sat there on a fallen log, watching dragonflies dance over the water, and felt that gentle pang of self-reflection: when’s the last time I switched off like this? Work’s been a right grind, emails piling up like fen mist, but here, miles from the nearest Costa, I was just… present. Emboldened, I veered off down another footpath the next morning, boots squelching in the peaty soil, and happened upon a cluster of old windmills near Three Holes itself – not the touristy ones, but these knackered beauties, sails long gone, creaking in the breeze like ancient sentinels. One had a bench nearby, perfect for a flask of builder’s tea and a flapjack. No crowds, no gift shop tat; just me, the wind, and a skylark warbling overhead. Light humour moment: tried “selfie-ing” with the mill in the background, but a gust whipped my hat into the dyke. Fished it out with a stick, dripping and triumphant – proper explorer vibes. By afternoon, another serendipitous detour led to a hidden picnic spot by a lock gate, where narrowboats chug lazily along the Twenty Foot River. I’d packed cheese sarnies from the lodge’s fridge, and scoffing them there, watching the water swirl, felt like I’d uncovered Norfolk’s best-kept secret. These fens are full of ’em – secret swims in lily-pad choked pools, wildflower meadows buzzing with bees, even a tiny pub in Upwell that looks like it’s from a postcard, with real ales and locals who nod like you’re an old mate. Staying at 1 Bed Lodge In Three Holes isn’t about grand adventures; it’s the joy of stumbling on these pocket-sized wonders by accident. Three days in, and I hadn’t driven further than a mile. Proper restorative – I’m already plotting a return. |
