About Norfolk
I finally made it to that cosy 1 Bed Lodge in Holkham after a right faff on the A149. We'd set off from Cambridge early doors, me, the missus, and our two lads, aged six and eight, buzzing for a proper Norfolk getaway. But typical us – about ten miles out from Wells-next-the-Sea, I took a wrong turn onto some tiny B-road, and the SatNav lost its marbles. "Recalculating," it kept bleating, while the boys started a chorus of "Are we there yet?" from the back. In the end, we pulled over by a field of tatties, I munched a slightly squished Greggs sausage roll from my bag as a peace offering, and we laughed it off. Classic family holiday chaos, innit? Twenty minutes later, we trundled into Holkham's pine-fringed lanes, the North Sea breeze already whipping through the car windows, carrying that salty tang that screams "proper break."

Pulling up to the lodge, I was chuffed to bits. Tucked in a serene spot amid Holkham's dunes and nature reserve, it's this quaint wooden number with a veranda that overlooks whispering pines and, if you're lucky, a glimpse of grazing deer. No grand stately home vibes here – just pure, unpretentious lodge life, perfect for our relaxed family do. We tumbled out the car, bags flying everywhere, and the lads immediately dashed off to poke at a massive pine cone they'd spotted. First impressions? Blissfully quiet, save for the rustle of leaves and distant waves crashing on Holkham Beach. The owner had left a welcome pack on the step – fresh milk, Norfolk shortbread, and a cheeky bottle of local ale. "Cheers to that," I thought, cracking one open while the wife sorted the keys.

Stepping inside, it was all we'd hoped: snug as a bug, with a double bed upstairs that looked like heaven after our drive, and a sofa bed downstairs for the boys' inevitable midnight kickabouts. The kitchenette was compact but kitted out – toaster, kettle, and a hob for knocking up beans on toast. We dumped our stuff and headed straight out for first impressions proper: a ten-minute wander to the beach. Holkham's sands are legendary – miles of golden emptiness, perfect for little 'uns to run wild without a soul in sight. The tide was out, revealing these vast mudflats where the boys started a game of "king of the castle" on a sandbank, only for one to plummet arse-over-tit into a puddle. Cue hysterical laughter and me playing hero with a towel. "Dad of the year," the wife quipped, snapping pics.

Back at the lodge by teatime, we cracked open the shortbread and watched the sun dip behind the pines from the veranda. Simple pleasures, eh? No telly blaring, just the crackle of a disposable BBQ we'd brought – bangers sizzling, the sea murmuring in the distance. The chaos kicked in when the youngest lobbed a sausage into the bushes for "the deer," sparking a half-hour bushwhack in the twilight. We found it, half-eaten by some creature, and collapsed in giggles around the tiny table. Sat there with a cuppa, I had a quiet moment of reflection: life's mad rush back home feels miles away here. In this little lodge, with sand in our shoes and full bellies, it's the small stuff – the mishaps, the shared laughs – that recharge the batteries. Norfolk's got that magic, doesn't it? Can't wait for day two, but bloody hell, what a cracking start.
