About Blakeney
Nestled in a quiet spot near Blakeney, this little wooden lodge is the epitome of "get away from it all without actually going far." From the moment I stepped inside, lugging my overstuffed bag, it wrapped me in a hug of cosiness. Low-beamed ceilings, a wood-burning stove already set with kindling (cheers to the hosts), and a squishy sofa that practically begged me to flop down. The kitchenette was tiny but perfectly formed – kettle on, PG Tips brewing, and a window overlooking a private garden that looked like it was made for dawdling. No grand views of the Severn, just birdsong and the rustle of leaves. Bliss. First impressions? Pure, unadulterated joy in doing sod all. After that drive, I didn't fancy traipsing miles; instead, I kicked off my shoes and sank into the garden. It's a proper sun-trap, with a couple of loungers, a table for al fresco cups of char, and borders bursting with wildflowers. I spent the first afternoon parked there with a dog-eared copy of Bill Bryson, chuckling at his mishaps while mine faded into irrelevance. The hut's got this hammock strung between trees – I gave it a go, swinging gently like a lazy pendulum, watching clouds amble by. Felt like a kid again, minus the scraped knees. Evening rolled in soft and slow. I pottered about, firing up the stove for a gentle crackle rather than a full blaze – no rush here. Dinner was simple: cheese on toast, a cheeky glass of red from the offy I'd spotted en route. No telly blaring, just the wireless on low, playing some Radio 4 drama I half-listened to while staring into the flames. It's funny how, back home, my diary's rammed with "must-dos," but here, the highlight was watching a squirrel nick a nut from the feeder. Proper entertainment. Next morning – day two of my three-day escape – dawned misty over the Forest of Dean edges. I ambled out for a mooch around Blakeney itself, just a short stroll away. The village high street's a treat: thatched cottages, the Blakeney Stores for fresh bread and local gossip, and the Owlpen Inn if you're peckish. I grabbed a paper and sausage roll, then wandered back, nodding to dog-walkers who all seemed in on the same secret of slowing down. Back at the hut, it was more reading in the garden, a spot of birdwatching (robins and tits galore), and a nap that stretched to two hours. No guilt, just gratitude. By day three, I'd hit peak sloth. Lounging in the hut's reading nook, feet up, I reflected on how daft it is rushing through life like a ferret on speed. This place stripped it back – no Wi-Fi nagging, no emails pinging, just me, a book, and the joy of bugger all. Hideaway Hut Wye isn't about epic adventures; it's a bolthole for recharging by doing precisely nowt. If you're knackered from the daily grind, book it. You'll thank me when you're hammock-bound and grinning. |
