About Blakeney
I finally made it to Blakeney after what felt like the scenic route from hell, my little Fiat groaning up those Forest of Dean hills like it was auditioning for a breakdown. I'd set off from Newent bright and early, sat-nav promising a breezy 20-minute jaunt to Berkeley Elite Spa, but oh no—some cheeky roadworks sign had me veering off onto a single-track lane that wouldn't look out of place in a horror film. Cue the insignificant mishap: I got wedged behind a tractor trundling along at snail's pace, its rear end sprouting enough hay bales to feed a village. There I was, tapping the wheel, humming along to Radio 2, wondering if I'd ever arrive or if this was karma for that extra slice of toast at breakfast.

By the time I pulled into the drive—miraculously intact, Fiat unscathed—it was pushing lunchtime, and the chaos of the journey melted away the second I clapped eyes on the place. Berkeley Elite Spa isn't your bog-standard holiday let; it's a proper treat, tucked away in Blakeney's sleepy embrace, all honey-coloured stone and thatched roof that screams "Norfolk countryside chic," wait no, hang on—Blakeney in the Forest of Dean? Aye, this one's a hidden gem, the sort of spot where the air smells like pine and possibility. I hopped out, suitcase wheels crunching on the gravel, and there it was: floor-to-ceiling windows framing a garden that backed straight onto whispering woods, the kind where deer might pop out for a nosy if you're lucky.

Pushing open the door—key under the mat, as promised, because who needs keyless entry when trust is this thick?—I was hit with that instant "home but better" vibe. The living room sprawled out like a hug, all plush sofas in muted greens and creams, a telly bigger than my flat's, and a wood-burning stove begging for a lazy evening crackle. But the real star? That spa setup. Right there in the open-plan heart of it, a bubbling hot tub big enough for a party (or just me, pretending), flanked by loungers that looked comfier than my own bed. Steam was already rising gently, and I could practically hear it whispering, "Forget the tractor, love, sink in."

I dumped my bags and did a proper recce, padding about in socks on the underfloor heating—bliss after the morning's muddle. The kitchen was a dream: granite worktops gleaming, a coffee machine that frothed milk like a barista on steroids, and a fridge stocked with local goodies—cheeses from nearby farms, I reckoned, and fresh milk that tasted like it came straight from a happy cow. Upstairs, the bedrooms were pure indulgence: king-sized beds piled high with goose-down duvets, en-suites with rain showers that could wash away a week's worth of city stress. Mine had a view over the garden, where birds were flitting about like they owned the joint. Light poured in, turning everything golden; first impressions? Bloody marvellous.

Wandering back down, I couldn't resist firing up the sauna—compact but fierce, wood-lined and toasty. Sat there for ten minutes, sweat beading, reflecting gently on how I'd almost bottled the whole trip after a daft row with a mate back home. "Why bother with fancy spas when you've got Netflix?" they'd scoffed. But here, towel-wrapped and zen, I thought, yeah, sometimes you need this— a proper unplug, no signal bars bossing you about, just the hum of nature outside. The garden called next: patio heaters at the ready, a fire pit circled by chairs, and that hot tub now frothing invitingly under the weak November sun. I slipped in, bubbles tickling my chin, and let out a laugh at the absurdity of it all—from tractor gridlock to tub paradise in under an hour.

Blakeney's magic seeped in too—the village proper just a stroll away, with its thatched cottages and the Plough Inn's pub sign swinging gently, promising real ales later. But right then, arrival chaos forgotten, I was smitten. Berkeley Elite Spa had me hooked from the off: elegant, effortless, and exactly the reset my soul craved. Three days? Can't come soon enough.
